Widower of woman denied abortion to sue Ireland

DUBLIN (AP) ? The widower of an Indian woman who died in an Irish hospital after being refused an abortion plans to sue Ireland's government in the European Court of Human Rights.

Praveen Halappanavar confirmed his decision Thursday through his lawyer, Gerard O'Donnell.

His wife Savita died Oct. 28 in a hospital in Galway, western Ireland, one week after being admitted for severe pain amid a miscarriage.

Doctors refused to perform an abortion for three days while the 17-week-old fetus still had a heartbeat. Savita fell gravely ill after the dead fetus was removed and then suffered gradual organ failure. A coroner ruled she died from blood poisoning.

The case has forced Ireland to re-examine its two-decade failure to pass any laws governing when women can receive abortions to save their own lives.

In elf ears and wizard hats, 'Hobbit' fans rejoice

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? Wearing elf ears and wizard hats, sitting atop their dad's shoulders or peering from balconies, tens of thousands of New Zealanders watched their favorite "Hobbit" actors walk the red carpet Wednesday at the film trilogy's hometown premiere.

An Air New Zealand plane freshly painted with "Hobbit" characters flew low over Wellington's Embassy Theatre, eliciting roars of approval from the crowd.

Sam Rashidmardani, 12, said he came to see Gollum actor Andy Serkis walk the red carpet ? and he wasn't disappointed.

"It was amazing," Rashidmardani said of the evening, adding his Gollum impression: "My precious."

British actor Martin Freeman, who brings comedic timing to the lead role of Bilbo Baggins, said he thought director Peter Jackson had done a fantastic job on "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

"He's done it again," Freeman said in an interview on the red carpet. "If it's possible, it's probably even better than 'The Lord of the Rings.' I think he's surpassed it."

While it is unusual for a city so far from Hollywood to host the premiere of a hoped-for blockbuster, Jackson's filming of his lauded 'LOTR' trilogy and now "The Hobbit" in New Zealand has helped create a film industry here. The film will open in theaters around the world next month.

One of the talking points of the film is the choice by Jackson to shoot it using 48 frames per second instead of the traditional 24 in hopes of improving the picture quality.

Some say the images come out too clear and look so realistic that they take away from the magic of the film medium. Jackson likens it to advancing from vinyl records to CDs.

"I really think 48 frames is pretty terrific and I'm looking forward to seeing the reaction," Jackson said on the red carpet. "It's been talked about for so long, but finally the film is being released and people can decide for themselves."

Jackson said it was strange working on the project so intimately for two years and then having it suddenly taken away as the world got to see the movie.

"It spins your head a little bit," he said.

Aidan Turner, who plays the dwarf Kili in the movie, said his character is reckless and thinks he's charming.

"I don't get to play real people it seems, I only get to play supernatural ones," he said. "So playing a dwarf didn't seem that weird, actually.

Perhaps the most well-known celebrities to walk the carpet were Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood, who reprise their roles in the LOTR in the "Hobbit."

"Mostly I came here to see everyone. I like them all," said fan Aysu Shahin, 16, adding that Wood was her favorite. She said she wanted to see the movie "as soon as possible. I'm excited for it."

At a news conference earlier in the day, Jackson said many younger people are happy to watch movies on their iPads.

"We just have to make the cinema-going experience more magical and more spectacular to get people coming back to the movies again," he said.

Jackson said only about 1,000 of the 25,000 theaters that will show the film worldwide are equipped to show 48 frames, so most people will see it in the more traditional format. The movie has also been shot in 3D.

A handful of animal rights protesters held signs at the premiere.

The protest by the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals comes after several animal wranglers said three horses and up to two dozen other animals had died during the making of the movies because they were housed at an unsafe farm.

Jackson's spokesman earlier acknowledged two horses had died preventable deaths at the farms but said the production company worked quickly to improve stables and other facilities and that claims of mistreatment were unfounded.

"No mistreatment, no abuse. Absolutely none," Jackson said at the news conference.

Google acquires couponfocused Incentive Targeting for undisclosed sum

Google is no stranger to the business of discounts and special offers, but it looks like it's decided to reach outside the company to further bolster its offerings. The company confirmed today that it has acquired the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based marketing firm Incentive Targeting for an undisclosed sum. While not offering too much in the way of specifics, Google said in a statement that "we look forward to working with Incentive Targeting in our ongoing efforts to help consumers save time and money and enable retailers deliver relevant discounts to the right customers." For its part, Incentive Targeting has said that it "set out to do for retail couponing what Google had done for online advertising: make it simple, relevant, measurable, and effective," and to that end it has developed a variety of tools for retailers and manufacturers alike, all designed to deliver coupons and discounts in a more targeting manner. You can find the company's full statement on its website.

Higher education: Humboldt State University launches marijuana institute

Humboldt County, California, ?the heartland of high-grade marijuana farming? in the Golden State according to The New Yorker, now boasts the first and ? for now ? only academic institute dedicated solely to cannabis.

The Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research on the campus of Humboldt State University sponsors scholarly lectures and will be a hub for research among 11 faculty members from a wide range of fields including economics, geography, politics and psychology, The Associated Press reports.

One of the professors is analyzing the politics of pot legalization, reports the Times-Standard of Eureka, CA. Another professor is researching the effects of marijuana cultivation on the environment. Politics professor Jason Plume will present a lecture this week on the marijuana reform movement ? one of seven lectures the institute is scheduled to host this year.

Humboldt State University in Arcata, about 280 miles north of San Francisco, is the northernmost campus of the California State University system.

?If anyone is going to have a marijuana institute, it really should be Humboldt State,? economist Erick Eschker, the institute?s co-chair, told the Times-Standard. ?It has the potential to be a world-class institute, and we?re just getting going.?

Eschker is currently collecting local marijuana production data and investigating its connection to employment in the county.

While various other American universities have institutes that bring together multiple disciplines to focus on illicit drugs, the one at Humboldt State appears to be the only one devoted exclusively to marijuana.

The notion for the institute first took root among Humboldt State faculty in 2010, reports the AP. At the time, California was in the midst of an intense political battle over Proposition 19, which, had it passed, would have made marijuana essentially the equivalent of alcohol under state law.

?With these public discussions, there were a lot more questions than there were answers,? said sociology professor Josh Meisel, the other co-chair of the institute, the Times-Standard says.

Meisel and other faculty members who are now part of the institute wanted to apply academic rigor to the economic, political and health-related issues raised by marijuana usage.

Now that voters in Colorado and Washington have passed ballot measures legalizing marijuana at the state level, the institute is more vital than ever.

?Our goal is to try and aid some more informed policy-level decisions,? Meisel said, according to the Times-Standard.

Ask The Expert: The Cross-Channel Impact of Online Banner Ads

?

By: John Faris, Director of Cross-Channel Marketing at Red Door Interactive
Featured in Transworld Business
November 22, 2012

When allocating digital marketing budgets across channels, it is certainly important to dedicate an appropriate amount of budget to ?closer? channels such as affiliate, search, and email. These channels are often the last ones that a consumer touches, prior to converting.

However, maintaining a significant spend in display advertising (also known as online banner advertising) is just as important. Banner ads introduce consumers to the brand, and influence people?s brand preference along the path to purchase, both online and offline. Furthermore, display advertising provides volume and scalability that other digital channels don?t have.

It is well known that banner ad click-through rates are obismal. Even the most compelling banner ads on the Internet aren?t clicked on by 99% of people who see them. This often scares marketers away from display advertising, because the immediate value isn?t obvious. However, it is important to understand that even when consumers are exposed to display ads, but don?t click, these ads can still have a significant impact on website traffic and retail foot traffic.

This makes sense, when you think of the context of banner ads, and how consumers behave. A person who is just browsing their favorite information, news, or entertainment website (i.e., business.transworld.net) usually doesn?t have an active intent to purchase something at the moment. But once they see a display ad several times, they consciously (or sub-consciously) associate the advertiser?s brand with a product category, or at least reinforce an existing association they?ve made. That can happen whether they click the ad or not. When the consumer eventually does have a need that the advertiser?s product can solve, they remember that association, and go directly to that website by typing in the url, or by searching for the brand name on a search engine like Google. In fact, a 2010 study from comScore and Valueclick Media showed that highly targeted ad buys, such as retargeting or audience targeting, can result in 500%-1,000% increase in the number of brand name searches that consumers conduct on search engines for the advertised brand.

The same study showed overall website visitation is lifted significantly through display advertising too ? by at least 250%. Because brand search and direct traffic are typically the top conversion sources for a brand website, driving incremental clicks from these sources can be a highly effective way to increase digital ROI.

Display ads can influence offline behavior too, in a similar way to how print ads, circulars, TV, and radio all drive people to retail. A recent study by Google and a leading US retailer compared retail sales in test markets saturated with online media, versus those in control markets that had no online advertising. The results showed that, when combined with search ads, display advertising created a 1.6% increase in offline sales and a 1000% return on investment. In this case, online ads performed at least as good as circulars did for the same brand.

Another great advantage to display is that the inventory is virtually limitless in comparison to other digital channels. Email campaigns are limited by the number of subscribers you have in your database. Search campaigns are limited by the number of people actively searching for your brand or other relevant keywords. And social campaigns are limited by the number of followers/fans that you have. But display campaigns are only limited to one thing ? the size of your target audience online. Given that ad networks like Google Display Network, AOL, and Value Click are able to reach upwards of 97% of the global Internet population, chances are that you can serve billions of impressions to consumers in your target market, and still have room to spend more.

As more marketing dollars shift to digital, action sports brands that want to scale their spend will need to move beyond solely investing in direct response channels. Ad clicks and ecommerce conversions are highly valued, and rightly so. But it?s a mistake to focus all of your effort on closer channels, while ignoring the opportunity that display advertising presents.

Consumers to spend less if middle-class taxes rise: White House

Women carry shopping bags through Times Square in New York

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A White House report says that if that Congress allows taxes to go up on middle-class families, consumers will spend $200 billion less in 2013.

The report by the White House's National Economic Council and Council of Economic Advisers, released on Monday, was the latest salvo by President Barack Obama to encourage lawmakers to extend tax cuts for families making less than $250,000 a year and fix a tax aimed at making sure wealthy people pay a minimum amount.

The newly re-elected Democratic president is negotiating with Republicans in Congress over the "fiscal cliff" - a combination of tax increases and spending cuts that would go into effect next year if the two sides do not reach a deal to stop it.

While the White House and Republican leaders wrangle over raising taxes on the wealthy - a key campaign promise of the president's - Obama would like Congress to pass measures now to lock in lower tax rates for the middle class, the primary constituency he courted in his re-election campaign.

"The president has called on Congress to act now on extending all income tax cuts for 98 percent of American families and not to hold the middle-class and our economy hostage over a disagreement on tax cuts for households with incomes over $250,000 per year," the report said. "The Senate has passed this bill and the president is ready to sign it."

The White House also wants lawmakers to fix the alternative minimum tax, which was set up decades ago so that wealthy Americans could not avoid taxes using legal tax breaks and loopholes. The AMT was not indexed for inflation and has to be updated or "patched" every year to avoid sweeping in millions of less affluent taxpayers.

"Allowing the middle-class tax rates to rise and failing to patch the Alternative Minimum Tax could cut the growth of real consumer spending by 1.7 percentage points in 2013," the report said.

"This sharp rise in middle-class taxes and the resulting decline in consumption could slow the growth of real GDP by 1.4 percentage points, which is consistent with recently published estimates from the Congressional Budget Office."

The CEA estimated that consumers would spend nearly $200 billion less next year as a result of higher taxes. The drop would hurt the retail industry, which has accounted for nine percent of employment growth since the U.S. recession ended in June 2009, the report said.

Lower Hutt School Staff Discover Novopay Security... | Stuff.co.nz

A school's staff discovered Novopay allowed them to access and alter their own timesheet details, exposing another glitch in the pay system's security.

Two pay administrators at Sacred Heart College, in Lower Hutt, demanded immediate action from Novopay operator Talent2 yesterday after they came across the latest lapse.

By the end of the day they had been locked out of making changes, and the Education Ministry claimed the error never existed.

The latest case comes against a background of more than 8000 logged errors in teachers' pay since Novopay was introduced in August. They include overpayments, underpayments, and sometimes no payments at all.

Australian firm Talent2, which runs Novopay under a $100 million contract with the ministry, is facing penalties of $50,000 each time the system botches the fortnightly payroll cycle, and chief executive John Rawlinson flew to New Zealand last week to deal with the barrage of criticism.

Sacred Heart deputy principal Alison Spencer, who is also an accountant, said she could access her own pay details, and add and validate her own leave.

And although she could not change her salary, she could have added as much extra overtime as she wished, and so could executive officer Irene Newrick.

Mrs Spencer was so shocked that she walked straight out of her office and told an auditor who happened to be at the school.

"I just need to tell you what I have just done. I've just accessed my pay," she told the auditor, who replied: "I don't think I want to hear this."

"There's no way I should have access to my pay, and Irene have access to her pay," Mrs Spencer said. "I can go in and do whatever I want to do, which is not good."

Ms Newrick said the previous Datacom system always needed a strong audit trail. "I could never ever sign off anything on my own.

"We assumed, stupidly, [that Novopay] would be locked, and we had never checked it.

"There may be other schools out there who also have this problem and aren't aware of it. I suspect they're in there now frantically looking at all the others," she said after dis- covering they were finally locked out.

Sacred Heart principal Lisl Prendergast said her staff were "too honest for their own good", but the temptation should never be there.

"What they should have is access to do things they need to do, but they shouldn't have access to their own pay."

In February, David Don, who was executive officer of St Patrick's College, Wellington, admitted taking more than $126,000 from the school after an audit of its 2010 accounts. He was jailed for two years.

Post Primary Teachers' Association president Robin Duff said the latest glitch was alarming, and should be "filling the ministry and secretary with fear and trepidation".

"Given the assurance we've had that this is a secure system, pretty worryingly it blows it out of the water."

Education Ministry group manager Rebecca Elvy denied there was ever an error as claimed by the Sacred Heart staff, because they could not amend their own details without someone else submitting the changes.

Rice to discuss Libya with McCain, lawmakers this week: aides

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice will meet with lawmakers this week to discuss her controversial remarks about the September attack in Benghazi, Libya, that have caused hurdles for her potential promotion to secretary of state.

The move, announced shortly after a top critic said he would be open to speaking to her, could fuel speculation that she is gunning for the nation's top diplomatic job.

Republicans have attacked Rice for appearing on TV talks shows shortly after the September 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi and saying that preliminary information suggested the assault was the result of protests over an anti-Muslim film rather than a premeditated attack.

Senator John McCain, a vocal opponent of Rice's possible nomination as secretary of state, said on Sunday he would be happy to meet with her about the issue.

A Senate aide said that Rice would meet with McCain as well as Senators Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte, fellow Republicans who have also criticized Rice.

An Obama administration official said Rice and Michael Morell, CIA's acting director, would meet with officials on Capitol Hill but declined to give details about timing.

"She and Mike Morell are meeting with folks on the Hill about Libya this week," the official said.

Rice said last week that her comments about the attack were based squarely on information provided to her by the intelligence community. The presence of Morell in the meetings is likely meant to give weight to that assertion.

President Barack Obama's nominee for the position must be confirmed by the Senate to take the job. Democrats have a majority in the Senate, but Republicans could block his choice.

The U.S. ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, and three other Americans were killed in the attack.

Rice will meet another Republican Senator, Susan Collins, later in the week. A Senate aide said the meeting was arranged at Rice's request. Collins is the ranking Republican on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, which is one of several committees probing the events in Benghazi.

Rice will also meet Senator Joe Lieberman, an independent who chairs the committee, according to a Senate aide.

Rice is considered a top contender to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is expected to step down at the end of Obama's first term.

Obama has not said who he wants to nominate for the post, but he bristled this month over Republican criticism of Rice, saying at a news conference that the senators should "go after" him rather than her. White House officials are fond of Rice and she is close to the president.

Senator John Kerry is also considered to be in the running to take over as the top U.S. diplomat.

Garage Wish List | 'Bout Home

The holiday season has begun, and thoughts will soon turn towards gift buying.? Instead of another sweater or robe for your significant other, opt instead to purchase items to make the garage a place of order and refuge.? It doesn?t matter if the recipient is male or female, as both sexes can appreciate gifts that either make life easier or more beautiful. From garage door openers to storage units, these gifts will be sure to please any homeowner.

An electric garage door opener is a necessity in cold climates.? Instead of getting out of a warm car on a dark night to open the garage door, these gadgets keep a person comfortable.? It?s 100% better to be able to automatically open and close a garage door than to have to do it manually; therefore, giving one as a gift will bring a huge smile to the face of the recipient.

Similarly, if a home has a dilapidated garage door, a new door would be a welcome gift.? Not only will a new door look better, it will help insulate the home more effectively.? Although a new garage door (and installation) may not be the perfect gift for everyone, I am sure a young couple who bought a fixer-upper would appreciate mom and dad paying for one.

The gift of safety speaks volumes.? Purchase a motion activated spotlight for above the garage door to thwart any would-be burglars.? These lights also work great for families who have children who need to use the garage keypad for entrance into the home at night.

Middle-priced items for the garage, such as storage units, also make wonderful gifts.? What homeowner doesn?t want to get a handle on all the the tall tools from rakes to shovels to garden hoes?? Or paint supplies?? Or garden supplies? There are storage units in all sizes and shapes to fit every need.

Also middle-priced are small refrigerators.? This gift item would be appreciated by a person who tends to spend a lot of time outside, and who would like the convenience of a cold drink without having to go all the way into the home.

Less expensive items for the garage could be used as stocking stuffers.? For instance, metal hooks for hanging bicycles from the ceiling will be appreciated, as will a new flashlight.? Another great idea ? a gift card to a home improvement store!

Of course there are many more gift ideas for the garage.? I know my husband?s favorite gift from me one year was the new riding lawn mower that is stored in the garage!? And he also liked the leaf blower and snow blower from previous years.

For homeowners, gifts that improve the look of the garage (new door), or the ease of use (garage door opener) can be most welcome.? Instead of buying another box of cologne or perfume, choose an item that will be used instead.

Three Big Changes Ahead for Higher Education | online learning ...

?The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.? ?Albert Einstein

A change of thinking is almost obligatory when considering the future of Higher Education. Last week was the final week of the MOOC Current/Future State of Higher Education (CHFE12); its overarching objective was to explore the influences and pressures facing universities today and to identify where higher education is headed. Numerous esteemed educators?[including author and Georgia Tech's? Richard Demillo and Vice Provost Joel Hartman of University of Central Florida] shared their knowledge, expertise, research, and in some cases predictions via webinars, to shed light on the conundrums within higher ed. The results are surprising, encouraging and telling of what educators need to do to adapt and be prepared.

In this post I?ll share my synopsis of the course by focusing on three areas of change. My aim is to share with readers the areas that will be most helpful and maybe even instructive in how-to adapt thinking and/or teaching. The three areas are: 1) the drivers of change in higher education, 2) change in pedagogical methods based upon progressive educators, and, 3) changes in educational models that are on the horizon for higher education. The latter point, is my prediction of where higher education is going based upon research and findings during this MOOC.? I?ve also included a list of resources at the end of this post, links to the recorded webinars and resources available from CHFE12.

1. Drivers of Change in Higher Ed
Change is constant, yet the rate of change in higher education is accelerating. The theme of ?change? was pervasive throughout the course; each webinar guest spoke of ?change? in some context. Though it was during the weeks? topic of Leadership in Education that explored change in-depth. James Hilton, Chief information officer at the University of Virginia during the webinar he led, Thriving in Times of Disruption, described change as profound, and creating chaos and conflict. Yet at the same time, Hilton described change as an opportunity for institutions to find its North Star, meaning its strengths ?to energize the institution by focusing on those identified.

The first step in adapting and thriving in a period of chaos is to objectively and carefully examine the drivers of change that are affecting a given sector. In our case education, we can narrow it down to three primary forces driving change.

  1. The abundance of quality content available on the web. Students have access to more content than ever before, which changes the paradigm of the student/teacher relationship. The professor teaching in a classroom is not the primary method for accessing scholarly expertise; content is no longer bound by cost, location or time.
  2. Interactive applications and platforms on the web accessible due to cloud technology. Blogs, Slideshare and Learning Management Platforms such as Moodle, are just a few examples of tools that are changing how education (content) is delivered and accessed. Online learning, through MOOCs, either Coursera or CHFE12 (via Desire2Learn) are examples of learning that was not available ten, or even five years ago.
  3. Mobile devices with Internet connectivity capability.? Millions of people around the globe, even in third world countries are owners of mobile devices that connect to the Internet. This capability drives not just educational change, but cultural and societal change as well.

2. Changes in Pedagogy
Education is becoming student focused, which means pedagogical methods are adapting and transforming accordingly.? During a webinar in week two of CFHE, Joel Hartman spoke of the new pedagogical models implemented at UCF. The new approach puts the student in the center, and provides a choice of five learning modalities. This approach is highly successful. A critical component to its success is educating faculty on the effective use of pedagogical methods in the various modalities. I wrote about these methods in-depth in a previous post.? Competency based learning, another approach uses a different pedagogy, one that focuses on the application of skill and knowledge through demonstration. Each are described in-depth below.

  1. Competency based learning either in face-to-face or online. Competency learning challenges the notion of ?seat-time? based upon the Carnegie Unit (time-based reference for measuring student achievement that is used by American colleges). Western Governors and Southern New Hampshire?s Innovation U (which I wrote about here) and University Now?? all examples of schools using competencies as a model for assessment and learning. Businesses in the community are supportive of this model, often partnering with colleges in the process.

?Another form of competency learning are adaptive learning platforms. Where student learning is customized through online programs that adapt and respond to students strengths and weaknesses. Knewton learning is an example of a company that delivers adaptive learning programs.

2. Blended and Online learning that are based upon models of constructivism or? connectivism.? Students are involved and active participants within learning, either constructing their learning with content and student peers (constructivism), or connecting with nodes within a network, making connections and acquiring knowledge as a result. Learning is moving towards treating students as part of the learning, not as passive ?vessels?.

3. Changing Models of Higher Ed
Below are the three directions that may emerge based upon the advancements and developments as discussed in the CFHE12 MOOC.

1) The traditional college experience where students attend college or universities will change; will be augmented with online learning, flipped classrooms, and blended learning. The community will become part of the education experience, where students work within the community to solve problems (project based learning) or work as part of their education. Four years of attendance will be the exception, less will be the norm.

2) Do-it-yourself college: ?Students will adopt the ?build-your-own-degree plan?. Colleges are becoming unbundled, which means students will be able to choose preferred courses, MOOCs and assessment of skill for credit. This model will grow as costs for college continue to be out-of-reach for the average family.

3) Life long learning (competency based): Students will become learners for life, where learning is one long, continuous process. It will not stop after high school, or even after college, but will continue as learners need new skills for career change, job training or even personal interests. MOOCs will play a role, as will courses offered through other venues, perhaps face-to-face, online or through iTunes U.? This model has much potential.

Conclusion
The future is bright for higher education. Resistance to change can be a significant barrier to the developments needed within education, but those that resist will eventually be forced to get on board or be left behind. Those that do change and adapt will have the opportunity to reach students as never before ? educate people of all ages to be productive, educated and contributing members of society. It all begins with embracing change, and changing our thinking.

The Catalan language is still in danger, despite its ... - Education

Other languages have a state to defend them and their speakers don't have to contend with a state that acts against their tongue

The erosion of the Catalan language began long before 1939, when the dictator Francisco Franco banned the teaching of Catalan after the Spanish civil war. At the beginning of the 18th century, Philip V of Spain ordered the Spanish language to be introduced into Catalan society. This language imposition was designed to creep into all levels of the Catalan community. The king's rather cynical words were: "The mayor must take the utmost care in introducing the Spanish language, using the most discreet and temperate measures, so that only the effects are felt, and not the measures."

Ever since the restoration of democracy, the Catalan language-immersion used in the Catalan education system has been crucial to holding together a society that seemed to be at risk of unravelling towards the end of the 1970s. The linguistic immersion also helps second-generation immigrants to integrate into Catalonia. These are children whose parents have come here from all corners of the world.

The expediency of this system has been recognised at an international level. The "Catalan system" ? as some countries call it ? has been praised by the EU and various international educational bodies, who use it as a reference point for other countries facing similar situations.

When travelling around the world, Catalans will often find themselves in a bar or at a discussion over dinner, and they will be asked if it's really worth saving the Catalan language. The fascinating thing about this is that the people who ask this question are usually people who have never once questioned the systems their own governments have put in place to protect their languages. I'd never dream of asking why the Swedish protect their language, nor why the Germans protect theirs. With us, it's a similar situation.

What's the difference then? We're not aliens with fluorescent green skin and trumpets for ears and noses. We're earthlings ? Europeans, in fact ? and the preservation of our language is something we care deeply about. Every language is unique, and no two are the same. The Mexican anthropologist Miguel Le?n-Portilla wrote a poem about this. It starts with these lines:

When a language dies
The divine things
stars, sun and moon
the human things
thinking and feeling
are no longer reflected
in that mirror

The poem is a little twee, granted, but the message couldn't be truer. The Catalan language is, and will be in danger. For three centuries, every single Catalan speaker has lived in a state where there's another, more dominant language spoken (Spanish or French). On top of that, history has at times tried to prohibit or marginalise Catalan.

This has led to a common conclusion for victims of abusive situations: Catalan speakers end up believing that they are to blame for their own maltreatment and humiliation.

I'm a pessimist. Even when my football team, FC Barcelona, are 4-0 up with 15 minutes to go, I still think we'll end up losing. Maybe that's why it saddens me so much to say that with every passing generation, the original syntactical structure of a language diminishes further. I know you'll say to me: "Come on, this happens with every language ? with Spanish, French, and Italian." This is true, of course. But those other languages don't carry the burden of not having their own state to defend them, nor do they have to contend with a state that systematically acts against their language.

That is why my naturally pessimistic spirit was uplifted one day when I read some words written by the great Isaac Bashevis Singer. He was asked why he continued to write in Yiddish, a language that was dying. Singer said: "Yiddish may be a dying language but it is the only language I know well. Yiddish is my mother language and a mother is never really dead." I feel more or less the same. And the longer a dying language holds out, the better.

Suicide bomber kills 23 people in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A suicide bomber struck a Shiite Muslim procession near Pakistan's capital, killing 23 people in the latest of a series of bombings targeting Shiites during the holiest month of the year for the sect, officials said Thursday.

The bomber attacked the procession around midnight Wednesday in the city of Rawalpindi, located next to the capital, Islamabad, said Deeba Shahnaz, a state rescue official. At least 62 people were wounded by the blast, including six policemen. Eight of the dead and wounded were children, said Shahnaz.

Police tried to stop and search the bomber as he attempted to join the procession, but he ran past them and detonated his explosives, said senior police official Haseeb Shah. The attacker was also carrying grenades, some of which exploded, said Shah.

"I think the explosives combined with grenades caused the big loss," said Shah.

Earlier Wednesday, two bombs went off within minutes outside a Shiite mosque in the southern city of Karachi, killing at least one person and wounding several others, senior police official Javed Odho said.

The bombings came as Shiites were observing the holy month of Muharram. On Saturday, Shiites will observe the holiest day of the month, Ashoura, which commemorates the seventh century death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson.

Sunnis and Shiites have been at odds since the seventh century over the true heir to Muhammad.

Pakistan has a long history of sectarian violence carried out by both extremist Sunni and Shiite Muslims against the opposite sect. Most attacks in recent years have targeted Shiites, who make up a minority in the overwhelmingly Muslim country.

Why You Should Buy a Home During the Holidays : Ardor New York ...

By Rehna on November 23rd, 2012

Every year there are better times than others to buy a home. And who would?ve thought the holiday season would be prime buying time? Well, if find yourself knee deep in house hunting materials read on; there are some definite advantages to pulling the trigger on a home purchase during the upcoming months.

1.) People are preoccupied. Think you just can?t handle the stress of entertaining out of town guests while still looking for your dream house? That?s what everyone else thinks too! People that have been house hunting for months will be taking a much needed break right around this time and if you can stick it out you can capitalize on their weariness.

2.) People are strapped for cash. Buying a home typically requires a large down-payment, and between purchasing holiday decorations, thanksgiving feast supplies and Christmas presents, everyone?s savings can start to take a bit of a hit, meaning the thought of putting $10,000 down on a new home might seem like a bad idea at the moment. Many people choose to wait a few months after the holiday season to build their savings back up and then make an offer. But if you?re smart and choose to stay within your holiday budget, your down payment will be ripe for the plucking.

3.) Motivated sellers. Just as people are going to be too busy to worry about buying a house, sellers will also be too busy to worry about selling it. With all the added stress, they are often just excited to get it over and done with, meaning they will be willing to accept much lower offers than during another time of the year. They might even be willing to throw in added bonuses, like appliances or window dressings just to speed things along.

4.) Lenders are foaming at the mouth. Less homes being bought and sold during this time of the year means lenders are receiving less business, and less business means they?re willing to go the extra mile to get yours. You could be looking at a lower interest rate or fewer fees in general, and who doesn?t love that?

5.) Tax benefits.? December 31st is fast approaching, but if you?re able to close before then you could be eligible for some substantial tax benefits. The interest element of your first monthly mortgage payment may be eligible for a tax reduction. Plus, anything you pay could be used as deduction points to reduce your loan interest rate. You should consult and experienced tax advisor to see what you would qualify for in your state, of course, but be aware of the potential tax benefits.

In the end, it?s tough to decide when it?s right to buy a home. There are so many factors that need to come together; it?s easy to see why anyone would be stressed! But just because things may get hectic around the holidays, don?t rule it out; you just might be able to find your pot of gold when everyone else stops looking!

New body scanner offers virtual tape measure for online shopping

LONDON (Reuters) - British researchers have come up with a new body scanning device that gives accurate measurements and could boost online clothes shopping.

Shoppers are still nervous about ordering clothes online because they often do not fit and, some say, there will never be a substitute for trying something on - one reason why the boom in online retail has not had the same impact on clothing as on music, books and electronics retailing.

In the United States, for instance, the consultancy ComScore estimated that only 14 percent of online spending went on clothes and accessories in the year to June.

The new scanner is being developed by the London College of Fashion, video imaging researchers at the University of Surrey and the company Bodymetrics.

The company already has in-store scanners that use the motion sensors from Microsoft Corp's Kinect gaming device in Bloomingdale's (part of Macy's Inc) in the United States, Selfridges and New Look in Britain, and Karstadt in Germany.

Some firms, including Berlin-based Upcloud, are already offering home scanners that use a webcam, but the British developers say their system is able to measure in unprecedented detail.

Philip Delamore from the London College of Fashion estimates that 30 to 60 percent of clothes bought online are returned.

"It's common for online shoppers to order two or three different sizes of the same item of clothing at the same time as they're unsure which one will fit best," he said.

With the new system, a shopper inputs his or her height as a reference and can then take a single full-length picture with a webcam or smartphone from which all their other measurements are calculated.

It uses the measurements combined with a person's overall proportions to build a 3D image.

Combining this with sizing information from retailers, the system would also overcome the problem of variable sizing, which can mean a shopper is a "medium" in one store but a "large" in another.

The technology builds on previous work by the University of Surrey that was used to create animated characters in games like the Sims.

Adrian Hilton, who is working on the technology at the University, told Reuters that while some shoppers may still enjoy the experience of browsing in stores and trying on clothes, for others an improvement in the reliability of shopping online will be welcome.

"For the male market, I think we're there," he said.

Boozed Star expected to shine in Bags Championship 2012 (sprint)

Winning Bags Championship 2012 - Sprint 235 on November 9 was a big achievement by Boozed Star who seems to be in good form at the moment. As a whole, the S. Saberton trained black dog has been winning with regular intervals since June.

In the light of these factors, we can expect that the two-year-old veteran hound will be able to seal top spot convincingly in the high-voltage race of Bags Championship 2012 (sprint)that is scheduled to make the scene at Yarmouth on Wednesday.

For the sake of the prize money worth ?200, Boozed Star will show his guts over the course of 277 metres after breaking from Trap 6.

The talented son of Micks Savings out of Boozed Lorraine has demonstrated decent performances on critical occasions. This is the reason he is considered to be a reliable commercial icon.

The young dog?s profile is adorned with triumphs and runner-up spots. He has tried his luck in almost every big format of the game.

The maverick sprinter marvellously won an A3 race by 4 ? lengths on June 20. He was the 6-4 favourite for that meeting. He moved ahead to bag another A3 triumph by 3 ? lengths on July 14.

Boozed Star impressed all and sundry by bagging the ace title of the Young Dons Football Club Charity Stakes on August 18. He beat the hot favourite contender, Ballymac Doreen, by 2 ? lengths to thrive. He outplayed another favourite runner, Mays Bonus, in an A1 race of August 29.

These stats show that the dog has made some nerve-rending upsets in his career. This time, he is favourite by himself. Thus, we must expect a whipping performance from him.

However, he will have to be wary of Broadacres Buddy who can give him a tough time in the playfield.

The J. A. White trained black dog registered a fabulous hat-trick of triumphs in May. He went on to win a race each in July and August. He brilliantly bagged a couple of A1??????????????? victories in October.

Thus, there will be a rip-roaring battle between the two mighty dogs. Good luck to the both.
