The explosions at the Mahabodhi temple complex in Bihar state were of low intensity and there was no damage to the shrine, senior police official SK Bhardwaj said.Two live bombs found near the temple were defused.
"We can confirm that it was a terrorist attack but for security reasons we cannot disclose groups we suspect," Bhardwaj by phone from state capital Patna.
The locale is key pilgrimage site where Gautama Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment more than 2,500 years ago.
"A Burmese monk and a local were injured in the explosions that took place at about 5:30 am," Bodhgaya Temple Committee secretary M Dorji told broadcaster NDTV.
"There is no damage to the holy Bodhi tree and its enclosure, no damage to the main temple, nor the statues or any structures," he said.
Dorji said there were few devotees inside the temple during the off-season. The main pilgrimage begins two months later.
"We were doing our daily rituals in the temple when we heard a big explosion," a witness told NDTV.//DPA
