Apple and Samsung move from love/hate to hate/hate

Apple reportedly reducing Samsung's role in component manufacturing

Apple seems to be moving to reduce its reliance on Samsung for the manufacture of the A-series processors found in iOS devices, and are possibly planning a move to another company for the production of future chips. While Apple and Samsung have been at odds in the smartphone market, they've remained close partners in manufacturing. The increasing rivalry between the two companies when it comes to the former is cited as the reason for their deteriorating relationship when it comes to the latter. The The Korea Times reports that love-hate might be turning into pure hate.

According to industry sources, Apple has not collaborated with Samsung in the process to develop its A6 microprocessor used in its latest iPhone 5. Samsung has handled the manufacturing of the processors used in previous iPhones and believed to have contributed in their design to some degree.

Apple is still relying on the Korean firm to manufacture its chips but has made it clear it will no longer use its rival?s technology, according to a senior Samsung official.

In addition to several lawsuits, Apple has hired a senior Samsung chip designer away from the company at a crucial time when both companies are intensifying their chip design efforts. The hire further drove the wedge between the two companies. A split makes the most sense for Apple, who undoubtedly loathes using a rival as the manufacurer of the brain of their most important devices and is bringing an increasing amount of chip design in-house. Samsung, on the other hand, stands only to lose the multibillion-dollar Apple contract if and when Apple makes the transition away from Samsung for new chip production.

Best Practices for Creating Innovative PR ... - Business 2 Community

Practicing PR in industries that are ruled by regulations can sometimes feel like an uphill battle, especially when you want to break through the communication clutter with innovative campaigns. Sadie Wilks, Vice President of Administration and Communication at the Louisiana State Medical Society, and Lesley Bruinton, Public Relations Coordinator for the Tuscaloosa City Schools, shared the challenges they face and

how they overcome them in our latest best practices webinar, moderated by Eric Warner of Thomson Reuters.

If you were unable to join the live webinar or would like to watch it again, it?s available on demand. You can also download the panelists? slide decks as reference guides. In the meantime, we?ve recapped four things you need to know from the discussion so you can forge ahead building novel PR campaigns while still playing by the rules.

Start by learning the ROPEs. A basic tenet of building successful PR campaigns that applies to building strategies in any industry ? Research, Objectives, Programs, Evaluation ? can be executed only if you truly understand your industry. Immerse yourself in the industry or business you are representing and become an expert by:

  • Learning the language
  • Knowing the rules
  • Leaning on your industry colleagues and peers

Identify what you CAN talk about. Whether you are working within government regulations such as HIPPA or FERPA like our panelists, or you are facing a different kind of red tape when creating your public relations campaigns, remember the following:

  • There is plenty you are able to talk about, focus on those points
  • Working within regulations doesn?t mean you can?t do something, it just means having to go through the proper channels and approvals
  • Keep yourself informed on new and updated regulations and policies to ensure you?re always in compliance

Break through the clutter. Regardless of the industry, the information you are communicating is important but there is a tremendous amount of competition for people?s attention. Developing campaigns that incorporate the newest communication methods will help you stay on the cutting edge and generate the buzz that will give you a successful return on your efforts. Despite being in very different sectors, both the Louisiana State Medical Society and Tuscaloosa City Schools found big success using video to communicate with their respective audiences.

You are not alone. Other PR professionals in similar industries or organizations can serve as great resources from which to learn from, float campaign ideas and swap war stories. Coming together to leverage data, successful experiences and lessons learned from failures can provide one of the most valuable tools possible for creating cutting-edge campaigns.

Gamers warned vs 'free' Bad Piggies | SciTech | GMA News Online ...

Gamers itching to play ?Bad Piggies,? the spinoff of the monster hit ?Angry Birds,? without paying for it may have to think twice before downloading a supposedly free version of the game.

?

Security firm Barracuda Labs said the alleged free web version of Rovio?s latest hit game is indeed a bad piggy: it installs an ad injector into the browser.

?

?First, this Angry Birds Bad Piggies game is not authentic: it is a pigs-shoot-birds game. Second, and much worse, once the game installs a plug-in that displays additional advertisements in some popular websites,? it said in a blog post.

?

Rovio?s ?Bad Piggies,? a puzzle game starring the villains from ?Angry Birds,? had zoomed to the top of Apple?s App Store charts shortly after its release.

?

Barracuda noted those behind the new malware attack are aware that there is no way to play the game without an iOS or Android device, at least for now.

?

?This market niche was not overlooked for long, and quickly free versions of games that claimed to be the original Bad Piggies appeared on the Google Chrome web store. ?Downloads from the Chrome web store can be played by anyone with the Chrome browser, installed on a Windows, Linux or Mac OS systems,? it said.

?

It also noted the supposed free games had plugins from www.playook.info, a maker of ?free? flash games that hides its name behind Whoisguard.

?

Barracuda also said these plugins request significant permissions: ?access your data on all websites.?

?

?At this step, you should stop installing this plugin. ?Playing a web-based game should have nothing to do with your other browser tabs at all,? it said.

?

Further investigation showed special code in the plug-in checks to see if the page originates with Yahoo and if so, inserts its own ad from playook.info.

?

Barracuda said this was not the first time that some Chrome plugins requested extra permissions during the installation.

?

Last month, it noted several ?Facebook Timeline Remover? plugins also requested permission to access data on all websites, where they should only touch Facebook.com websites.

?

?Users who give up such extensive permission run the risk of getting their browsers hijacked. ?The plugin authors can acquire all the web data when users browse the Internet with Chrome and then misuse users information, such as stealing and selling user email addresses and online credit card information,? it said.

?

As of Oct. 2, Barracuda said some 82,593 Chrome users had installed these ad-injected plugins, and the total number is still climbing fast day by day.

?

It suggested that Chrome users trying to install a plugin inside the Chrome web store should keep an eye on the requested permissions.

?

?If the plugin requests any permission that does not seem reasonable, do not install it. If you have already installed, uninstall them immediately and change your passwords on other websites if possible,? it said.

?

On the other hand, it said Google should provide better secure solutions on Chrome web store to protect its users as Chrome becomes more popular.

?

?Until then, it?s especially important that Chrome users know how to protect themselves,? it said. ? TJD, GMA News

Report: Turkish jets strike PKK bases in Iraq

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkish jets have struck suspected Kurdish rebel targets in two separate cross-border raids in northern Iraq, a Turkish news agency reported Monday, prompting Iraq to vow to take "diplomatic" steps against Ankara for violating its sovereignty.

Turkey has frequently struck targets of the autonomy-seeking Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, in northern Iraq. But with relations between Turkey and Iraq deteriorating, Baghdad recently warned Turkey against military operations on its territory.

Ties between Ankara and Baghdad have reached a low over a Turkish decision to shelter Iraq's Sunni vice president, even after a Baghdad court sentenced him to death for running death squads. Turkey also started importing crude oil from northern Iraq under a deal with the Iraqi Kurdish administration that has angered Baghdad.

In August, Iraq accused Turkey of interfering in its internal affairs after Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu paid a surprise visit the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, seen as a testing ground for whether Iraq's sectarian leaders can reach reconciliation.

Turkey's private Dogan news agency said the warplanes on Sunday targeted four rebel bases and anti-aircraft batteries along the border with Turkey and on Mount Qandil, on the Iraqi-Iranian border. The agency, quoting unidentified military sources, said more than 12 F-16 fighter jets took part in the operations. It did not report any casualties.

There was no official confirmation of the raids, which were also reported by Firat news, a website close to the rebels. The Turkish Defense Ministry and military officials would not comment.

Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said Monday the Turkish airstrikes were a violation of Iraq's sovereignty.

"Turkey should respect the principles of good neighborhood," he said in Moscow. "These Turkish attacks on Iraqi territories are not acceptable and we will take the necessary diplomatic measures."

Kurdish rebels fighting for self-rule in Turkey's southeast use northern Iraq as a springboard for attacks. The PKK is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the European Union. Tens of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict since 1984.

Dabbagh said: "We do understand the reasons behind such acts, yet we do not tolerate such breaches."

In Iraq, Ahmet Deniz, a spokesman for the rebel group, said the Turkish warplanes had struck bases on Qandil that had long been abandoned as well as some villages in the area. He said the bases were deserted after previous strikes and that there were no casualties.

Lilly drug may help memory loss in mild Alzheimer's

(Reuters) - Eli Lilly and Co said its experimental Alzheimer's drug led to a 34 percent reduction in memory decline for patients with mild symptoms over a period of 18 months, giving it potential ammunition to seek approval of the medicine that failed to benefit more advanced stages of the disease.

Lilly in August said the medicine, solanezumab, did not meet the primary goal of halting progression of the memory-robbing disease in patients with mild-to-moderate symptoms in two late-stage trials.

But while some rival compounds have been relegated to the scrap heap after similar failures, Lilly indicated at the time that there were some signs that solanezumab had prevented cognitive decline for people at an earlier stage of the disease.

On Monday, the company presented results on the drug pooled from the two large studies that focused only on those with mild Alzheimer's.

Lilly's shares rose more than 4 percent as some investors were encouraged that the improvement could warrant consideration from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

"Today there are no medicines that slow progression of Alzheimer's and we think that ought to be considered as we go talk to regulators," David Ricks, head of Biomedicines for Lilly, said in a telephone interview.

"We'll make the argument this data is important in view of the high unmet need. But ultimately it's the FDA's judgment to make in terms of whether to let the drug on (the market) with these data," Ricks said.

The newly released data did not show that solanezumab offered protection against the loss of physical function.

But it will likely lend further credence to the theory that Alzheimer's must be attacked early in the progression of the disease for drugs to have an impact.

Dr. Ronald Petersen, Director of the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in Rochester, Minnesota, threw out a note of caution about the drug's prospects.

"What you are seeing in the data is statistically significant," he said. "But it's hard to say that this is going to be meaningful clinically."

Initial data unveiled in August created doubts about whether the drug could be approved by the FDA without large new studies. It followed disappointing results for Pfizer Inc's and Johnson & Johnson's bapineuzumab, which also failed in pivotal studies. Both treatments block a protein called beta amyloid that forms plaque deposits on the brain.

Eli Lilly shares rose 4.2 percent, or $2.03, to $50.27 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange

Water Scorpion Care and Habits - Aquatic Insects for Arachnid Fans ...

Water Scorpion with guppyHello, Frank Indiviglio here.? Over the past several months, I?ve spent much time collecting aquatic insects with my nephew, who is quite the intense little naturalist (please see photos ? I?m having as much fun as he!).? In addition to our usual haul of backswimmers, predacious diving beetles, dragonfly larvae and the like, this season I was pleased to find a healthy population of Brown Water Scorpions (Ranatra fusca).? Combining characteristics of mantids, walking sticks and scorpions, all modified for life underwater, these amazing creatures are simple to keep and fascinating to get to know.?

Aquatic Insects as Pets

In years past, I set up aquatic insect exhibits for several zoos and public aquariums, but it seems that interest remains rather low among private invertebrate keepers.? This surprises me, as their range of lifestyles rivals that of their land-bound cousins, and never fails to astonish me even after all these years.? Please see this article for information on aquatic beetle care, and watch for others in the future.?

Natural History?

Classification

Water Scorpions are classified in the order Hemiptera and the family Nepidae.? Members of the order Hemiptera, known as True Bugs, have sucking, beak-like mouthparts.? Examples include cicadas, giant water bugs, backswimmers, leafhoppers and aphids. Approximately 270 Water Scorpion species have been described worldwide, 13-15 of which inhabit North America. ?No doubt many others are awaiting ?discovery?.?

Physical Description

The body of the Brown Water Scorpion resembles that of a terrestrial stick insect and is yellowish-tan to dark brown in color.? Others, including those in the North American genus Nepa, are flattened in appearance.? The front legs are raptorial (designed for grasping) and superficially similar to those of a praying mantis.? Unlike a mantis, however, the terminal segments of the Water Scorpion?s front legs fit into a groove when not in use, and swing out like folding knives when needed.? These hook-like leg tips can be seen in the photo showing a Water Scorpion poised just below a guppy.

The middle and hind legs are about as long as the body, and paired breathing tubes are situated at the end of the abdomen.? This species reaches 1.75 inches in length (to approximately 3 inches including the breathing tube).

Water Scorpions can fly, but do so only rarely.

Amazing Organs

Three pairs of disc-shaped organs on the abdomen, known as false spiracles, enable Water Scorpions to gauge water depth and compensate for changes in water pressure.

Range

From southern Canada through much of the continental USA to northern Mexico.?

Habitat

Poorly adapted for swimming, Water Scorpions favor the still waters of ponds, swamps, lake edges and canals, where they remain immobile among plants and sticks.? The photo of my nephew ?waiting in ambush? shows their typical habitat.?

Diet

Water Scorpion predatory hooksThis voracious carnivore feeds largely upon the body fluids of invertebrates, but will also take small tadpoles, fishes and newts.? Water Scorpions are ambush predators, relying upon camouflage when hunting.? They lash out with the front legs and subdue prey via salivary fluids injected through the sharp beak.? These fluids contain chemicals that tranquilize prey and initiate digestion; food is consumed in liquid form, in the manner of spiders.

Reproduction

Eggs are inserted into living or dead plants, and hatch in 2-4 weeks.? The nymphs resemble the adults (incomplete metamorphosis) and mature in 4-6 weeks.

Captive Care

Enclosure

The aquarium should be covered and the water slow-moving.? Water Scorpions are poorly-equipped for swimming, and will perish if buffeted by strong currents.?

The tank should be well-stocked with plants (preferably live) and sticks that rise to the water?s surface.?? Water Scorpions breathe by extending the abdominal breathing tubes above the water?s surface, and cannot utilize oxygen dissolved in the water. They will not thrive if unable to station themselves on a plant or stick near the water?s surface.

Filtration and Water Quality

Water Scorpions may be kept in an unfiltered bowl, jar, or aquarium if provided a weekly water change (please see photo of my simple enclosure).? Live plants will enhance the aquarium?s appearance and assist in maintaining water quality.? If filtration is desired, be sure to avoid strong water currents.? Sponge, undergravel, and corner filters are ideal.

Although Water Scorpions inhabit waters that are often subjected to varying pH and ammonia levels, water quality should not be ignored. In this regard, they should be maintained as are tropical fishes (please write in if you need further information).? Water used in the aquarium should be treated with chlorine/chloramine removal drops and maintained at pH 6.8-7.2.?

Light, Heat and Water Quality

Temperatures of 65-82 F are well-tolerated.

Feeding

Water Scorpions are attracted to prey by movement, and will take small crickets and bits of fish, shrimp and earthworm from tongs.? I also offer small guppies, mosquito larvae and blackworms.? I?ve not seen them take smaller prey items, but mosquito larvae do disappear (and seem not to be buzzing about the house!).?

Compatible Species

In common with many aquatic insects, Water Scorpions will consume smaller individuals of their own species.? However, as captive breeding seems not to have been recorded, keeping several in a well-planted aquarium would be worthwhile (reduced temperatures and a shortened light cycle in winter may encourage reproduction).?

These slow, deliberate hunters will not get enough food in aquariums housing diving beetles, water boatmen, fishes and other aggressive feeders.? In such situations, they must be individually fed via tongs.

Captive Longevity

Adults over-winter and can live for 2 ? 2.5 years.

Handling

Child with Water ScorpionAs you can see from my 4-year-old nephew?s smiling face, Water Scorpions are rather ?stiff? and cannot bite if held as illustrated.? The long beak seems quite formidable, but several observers report that it cannot pierce human skin (this re Brown Water Scorpions; others not mentioned).? I?m wary of aquatic insects, however, as even the smallest predatory species can usually inflict a painful bite.? After so many decades of being bitten and stung by creatures large and small, I have no desire to experiment!? I advise that you handle via tongs or a net.?

What Can I Do?

Insects and other invertebrates occupy every conceivable aquatic habitat, from birdbaths to swamps and even the sea.? Running a net or small strainer through just about any bit of available water will yield a treasure trove of interesting creatures, many of which are quite easy to keep and even breed.? So get out there and look around, and please feel free to write in with suggested topics, so that I can cover your favorite species.

Please check out my posts on Twitter and Facebook. ?Each day, I highlight breaking research, conservation news and interesting stories concerning just about every type of animal imaginable.? I look forward to hearing about your interests and experiences as well, and will use them in articles when possible.

Please also post your questions and comments below?I?ll be sure to respond quickly.?

Thanks, until next time,

Frank Indiviglio

By Steve Singleton -

Why do we resist change?

As the saying goes, the only people who like change are busy cashiers and wet babies. We find change disorienting, creating within us an anxiety similar to culture shock, the unease visitors to an alien land feel because of the absence of the familiar cues they took for granted back home. With an established routine, we don?t have to think! And thinking is hard work.

Change is a business fact of life

Is your company is currently undergoing major changes that will affect the lives of all of its employees? These changes are probably in response to the evolving needs of your customers. They are made possible because of improvements in telecommunications and digital technology. They are likely guided by accepted principles and practices of total quality management. And you can expect that they will result in significant improvements profitability?a success that all employees will share. Because our customers? needs are NOW, we must make changes swiftly, which means that all of us must cooperate with the changes, rather than resist them.

How do we resist change?

We tend to respond to change the same way we respond to anything we perceive as a threat: by flight or fight. Our first reaction is flight?we try to avoid change if we can. We do what futurist Faith Popcorn calls ?cocooning?: we seal ourselves off from those around us and try to ignore what is happening. This can happen in the workplace just by being passive. We don?t volunteer for teams or committees; we don?t make suggestions, ask questions, or offer constructive criticism. But the changes ahead are inescapable. Those who ?cocoon? themselves will be left behind.

Even worse is to fight, to actively resist change. Resistance tactics might include negativity, destructive criticism, and even sabotage. If this seldom happens at your company, you are fortunate.

Take a different approach to change

Rejecting both alternatives of flight or flight, we seek a better option?one that neither avoids change nor resists it, but harnesses and guides it.

Change can be the means to your goals, not a barrier to them.

Both fight and flight are reactions to perceiving change as a threat. But if we can change our perceptions, we can avoid those reactions. An old proverb goes, ?Every change brings an opportunity.? In other words, we must learn to see change as a means of achieving our goals, not a barrier preventing us from reaching them.

Another way of expressing the same thought is: A change in my external circumstances provides me with an opportunity to grow as a human being. The greater the change is, the greater and faster I can grow. If we can perceive change along these lines, we will find it exciting and energizing, rather than depressing and debilitating.

Yet this restructuring of our perspective on change can take some time. In fact, coping with change follows the same steps as the grieving process.1 The steps are shock and denial that the old routine must be left behind, then anger that change is inevitable, then despair and a longing for the old ways, eventually replaced by acceptance of the new and a brighter view of the future. Everyone works through this process; for some, the transition is lightning fast, for others painfully slow.

Realize your capacity to adapt.

As one writer put it recently:

Our foreparents lived through sea changes, upheavals so cataclysmic, so devastating we may never appreciate the fortitude and resilience required to survive them. The next time you feel resistant, think about them and about what they faced?and about what they fashioned from a fraction of the options we have. They blended old and new worlds, creating family, language, cuisine and new life-affirming rhythms, and they encouraged their children to keep on stepping toward an unknown but malleable future.2

Human beings are created remarkably flexible, capable of adapting to a wide variety of environments and situations. Realizing this can help you to embrace and guide change rather than resisting or avoiding it.

Develop a coping strategy based on who you are.

Corporate employees typically follow one of four decision-making styles: analytical, directive, conceptual, and behavioral. These four styles, described in a book by Alan J. Rowe and Richard O. Mason,3 have the following characteristics:
Analytical Style

    - technical, logical, careful, methodical, needs much data, likes order, enjoys problem-solving, enjoys structure, enjoys scientific study, and enjoys working alone.

Conceptual Style ? creative and artistic, future oriented, likes to brainstorm, wants independence, uses judgment, optimistic, uses ideas vs. data, looks at the big picture, rebellious and opinionated, and committed to principles or a vision.

Behavioral Style ? supportive of others, empathetic, wants affiliation, nurtures others, communicates easily, uses instinct, avoids stress, avoids conflict, relies on feelings instead of data, and enjoys team/group efforts.

Directive Style- aggressive, acts rapidly, takes charge, persuasive and/or is manipulative, uses rules, needs power/status, impatient, productive, single-minded, and enjoys individual achievements.

Read once more through these descriptions and identify which style best describes you. Then find and study the strategy people who share your style follow to cope with change:

Analytical coping strategy

    - You see change as a challenging puzzle to be solved. You need plenty of time to gather information, analyze data, and draw conclusions. You will resist change if you are not given enough time to think it through.

Conceptual coping strategy ? You are interested in how change fits into the big picture. You want to be involved in defining what needs to change and why. You will resist change if you feel excluded from participating in the change process.

Behavioral coping strategy ? You want to know how everyone feels about the changes ahead. You work best when you know that the whole group is supportive of each other and that everyone champions the change process. If the change adversely affects someone in the group, you will perceive change as a crisis.

Directive coping strategy- You want specifics on how the change will affect you and what your own role will be during the change process. If you know the rules of the change process and the desired outcome, you will act rapidly and aggressively to achieve change goals. You resist change if the rules or anticipated results are not clearly defined.

Realizing what our normal decision-making style is, can enable us to develop personal change-coping tactics.

How can we cope with change?

1. Get the big picture. ? Sometimes, not only do we miss the forest because of the trees, but we don?t even see the tree because we?re focused on the wood. Attaining a larger perspective can help all of us to cope with change, not just the conceptualists. The changes underway at my company are clearly following at least four important trends, which I believe are probably reflective of businesses in general:

?

    • Away from localized work toward network-based work,

?

  • Away from a feast-or-famine working environment toward a routinely busy working environment,

?

?

  • Away from site-limited approaches toward approaches that are consistent company-wide, and

?

?

  • Away from vertical, top-down management toward a more horizontal management structure, with shared accountability.

?

?

Getting at least this much comprehension of the big picture will help us to understand where each of us fits.

2. Do some anchoring. ? When everything around you is in a state of flux, it sure helps to find something stable that isn?t going to change, no matter what. Your company?s values (whether articulated or not) can provide that kind of stability for you. Ours include the Company Family, Focus on the Customer, Be Committed to Quality, and Maintain Mutual Respect. These values are rock-solid; they are not going to disappear or rearrange themselves into something else. Plus, each of us has personal values that perhaps are even more significant and permanent. Such immovables can serve as anchors to help us ride out the storm.

3. Keep your expectations realistic. ? A big part of taking control of the change you experience is to set your expectations. You can still maintain an optimistic outlook, but aim for what is realistically attainable. That way, the negatives that come along won?t be so overwhelming, and the positives will be an adrenaline rush. Here are some examples:

?

    • There will be some bumps along the road. We shouldn?t expect all of the changes ahead to be painless, demanding only minimal sacrifice, cost, or effort. In fact, we should expect some dead ends, some breakdowns in communications, and some misunderstandings, despite our best efforts to avoid them. We may not be able to anticipate all of the problems ahead, but we can map out in general terms how we will deal with them.

?

  • Not everyone will change at the same rate. The learning rates of any employees will distribute themselves along a bell curve. A few will adapt rapidly, most will take more time, and a few will adjust gradually. Also, many younger employees may find change, especially technological innovations, easier than those older. The reason may be, as one observer explains, ?Older people?s hard disks are fuller.?4 On the other hand, you may find some younger ones surprisingly reluctant to take on a new challenge.

?

?

  • The results of change may come more slowly than we would want. As participants in an ?instant society,? conditioned by the media to expect complex problems to reach resolution in a 60-minute time frame, we may find the positive results of change slow to arrive from the distant horizon. If we are aware of this, we won?t be so disappointed if tomorrow?s results seem so similar to today?s.

?

?
4. Develop your own, personal change tactics.Get plenty of exercise, plenty of rest, and watch your diet. Even if you take all the right steps and follow the best advice, undergoing change creates stress in your life, and stress takes energy. Aware of this, you can compensate by taking special care of your body.

Invest time and energy in training. Sharpen your skills so that you can meet the challenges ahead with confidence. If the training you need is not available through Bowne, get it somewhere else, such as the community college or adult education program in your area.

Get help when you need it. If you are confused or overwhelmed with the changes swirling around you, ask for help. Your supervisor, manager, or coworkers may be able to assist you in adjusting to the changes taking place. Your human resources department and any company-provided counseling services are other resources available to you.

Make sure the change does not compromise either your company values or your personal ones. If you are not careful, the technological advances jostling each other for your attention and adoption will tend to isolate you from personal contact with your coworkers and customers. E-mail, teleconference, voice-mail, and Intranet can make us more in touch with each other, or they can keep us antiseptically detached, removed from an awareness that the digital signals we are sending reach and influence another flesh-and-blood human being.

Aware of this tendency, we must actively counteract the drift in this direction by taking an interest in people and opening up ourselves to them in return. We have to remember to invest in people?all of those around us?not just in technology.

The ?new normalcy?

Ultimately, we may discover that the current state of flux is permanent. After the events of September 11, Vice President Richard Cheney said we should accept the many resultant changes in daily life as permanent rather than temporary. ?Think of them,? he recommended, ?as the ?new normalcy.??

You should take the same approach to the changes happening at your workplace. These are not temporary adjustments until things get ?back to normal.? They are probably the ?new normalcy? of your life as a company. The sooner you can accept that these changes are permanent, the better you can cope with them all?and enjoy their positive results.
