Your Thyroid ? A Primer
Compiled by Linda Tuccio-Koonz/HealthyLife
Found in the front of the neck, the thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland that?s part of the endocrine system, which regulates hormones. It uses iodine to make hormones that control the body?s heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and metabolism. Think of it as an internal thermostat. When it doesn?t work right, you feel out of kilter.
ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: More Facts
- Hypothyroidism can be treated with thyroid hormone replacement drugs. In some cases, surgery is required. Hypothyroidism is more common than its counterpart and most prevalent in women ages 30-50.
- Medications can relieve hyperthyroidism. Dietary changes can help, too. Some patients go into remission permanently and others require further treatment, which can lead to hypothyroidism.
- Factors that can increase risk of thyroid cancer include: radiation exposure, low-iodine diet, family history of thyroid cancer or colon growths, being female (women are three times more likely to develop this cancer than men, most often in their 40s and 50s).
- Thyroid disease is tricky to diagnose. Its symptoms can be vague, and mimic those of menopause, pregnancy and chronic health disorders.
- Thyroid cancer often has no noticeable symptoms. Swelling or small lump on front of neck is often the first sign. Other less common symptoms: hoarseness, trouble swallowing, persistently swollen glands, difficulty breathing, coughing and/or pain in throat or neck that won?t go away.
- Thyroid cancer treatment can involve surgery as well as radiation therapy.
- The thyroid gets its name from the Greek word for shield.
- Measuring levels of different hormones in the blood can determine if your thyroid gland is working properly.
You can test yourself for an underactive thyroid by taking under-arm temperature for 15 minutes first thing in the morning. Reading of 97.6 F or lower is an indicator. Keep a log for five days. If readings are consistently low, consult your doctor.

Plane on fire after running off Moscow runway
MOSCOW (AP) ? A passenger airliner ran off the runway at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport on Saturday, breaking apart and catching fire.
The Emergency Ministry said 12 people were aboard the Tu-204 and all were rescued but two were in serious condition, according to the state television news channel Vesti.
The channel showed a photo of the wrecked plane's fuselage with the livery of Red Wings airline. The plane's nose, including the cockpit area, appeared sheared off.
Details on the crash were not immediately clear. Initial reports said the plane crashed while attempting to land, but later reports said it had crashed while taking off. Light snow was falling in Moscow at the time.
The Tu-204 is a twin-engine medium-range jet with a capacity of 210 passengers.

Andrius Kubilius and his wife Rasa left their appartment in Turni?k?s and moved to a newly build house in the Gvazdikai garden community, near Kair?nai. Here the family of the Seimas oppostion leader is happy and surrounded by nature, writes delfi.lt referring to ?Lithuanian News?.
In the last four years A. Kubilius lived with his wife in their apartment in Turni?k?s, rented by the Prime Minister?s service, and now they have moved to an even more beautiful place. The house stands in the small street surrounded by the forest, in the ?Rasa? garden plot community belonging to the eldest son of A. Kubilius.
?This house is the creation of our whole family. The ownership belongs to our son Vytautas and it is built with a loan from the bank in his name. Their son works in an international company and spends most of his time abroad. The company?s regional office is in Warsaw? ? said the former Premier A. Kubilius to Lithuanian News.
The house was built in a garden plot that A. Kubilius? father inherited. As A.? Kubilius stated in the declaration of public and private interests, he vouched for son?s loan which is between 300 thousand to 400 thousand litas. A. Kubilius? youngest son and family live in his former apartment on Mildos street.

Best SEO tips: Six-Star Cruising on Luxury Cruise Lines ...
There are six cruise lines that are in the luxury class: Crystal Cruise Line, Cunard Cruise Line, Radisson Seven Seas, The Yachts of Seabourn, Silversea Cruise Line, and Windstar Cruises.
Crystal Cruise Line has received numerous awards for excellence. For the last nine years, Conde Nast Traveler has named Crystal ?Best Large-Ship Cruise Line?. Also for the last nine years, Travel + Leisure magazine has given Crystal the status of ?World?s Best Large-Ship Cruise Line?. And for service, a Travel + Leisure reader?s poll voted Crystal ?World?s Best?. Crystal Cruise Line operates only three ships: Crystal Harmony, Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. These ships carry approximately 1,000 passengers each and Crystal Cruise Line boasts the greatest passenger space per guest of any cruise line.
Do you recognize the ship names Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth? These great ships come from Cunard, a name long synonymous with luxury and elegance in cruises. ?With Cunard, the journey may be even more magnificent than the destination? states their promotional literature. Cunard operates just two award-winning luxury ships. The Queen Mary 2, launched in January, 2004, is known as the longest, tallest and largest ocean liner and carries 2,620 passengers. It is replacing the Queen Elizabeth 2 for transatlantic crossings but the QE2 will still be available for cruises.
Radisson Seven Seas is a small luxury cruise line. Small here means that the ships carry a small number of passengers. Fewer than 700 fortunate passengers per cruise are pampered by attentive staff. Radisson Seven Seas has been named by Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines to be the ?World?s Best Small Cruise Line?. Radisson Seven Seas appeals to the sophisticated traveler.
The Yachts of Seabourn cruise line advertises that they provide ?Ultra Luxury? by ?delivering the highest levels of personalized service to an exclusive group of guests aboard intimate, elegant ships that could visit the most enticing destinations worldwide.? Seabourn sails three identical all-suite ships that cater to only 208 passengers each. Of course, dining and service is world-class.
Silversea Cruises is a new company, founded in 1994, for the express purpose of providing an ultra-luxury cruise experience aboard small and intimate ships with all the features of a large cruise vessel. The Silverseas ships Cloud, Wind, Shadow, and Whisper provide all-suite accommodations that between 250 square feet and over 1,300 square feet in size. Silversea vies with Radisson Seven Seas and Crystal Cruise Lines for the accolades of Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure in the world?s best categories. Silversea Cruises has also has been named by Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines to be the ?World?s Best Small Cruise Line? many times since its inception.
Windstar Cruises offers a totally different sailing experience. Windstar Cruises offers motor-sail-yachts instead of cruise ships. Yes, their ships actually have sails that are computer-controlled with the latest in technology. Windstar?s four ships carry just 148 to 308 passengers in staterooms or luxurious suites, giving the feel of being aboard a personal yacht. Even with such a small fleet, Windstar Cruises sail to over 47 countries around the world.
If you?re in the market for a luxury cruise, there are a number of excellent cruise lines to chose from.

56% of female university students get drunk in record time, Spanish study suggests
Dec. 28, 2012 ? Researchers from the HealthyFit group at the University of Vigo have studied university students' lifestyles; their analysis, which includes alcohol and illegal drug consumption habits, sport and food, concludes that most students indulge in unhealthy behaviour. One of the main results of the study points to the high consumption of alcohol.
"The amount drunk per unit of time is higher among women. In other words, even though male students drink more often, females do so more intensively in shorter periods of time, which is known as binge drinking," explained Jos? M? Cancela Carral, co-author of the study published by the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
Researchers randomly selected 985 students from different degree courses and in different years at the University of Vigo.
Of the females interviewed, 51.2% lead a sedentary lifestyle, while the percentage in males is 41.7%. When analysing students who maintain an appropriate level of physical activity, 38.6% of males do physical exercise, as opposed to only 20.9% of women.
"We were also surprised by the high consumption of illegal drugs among university students -- 44.9% of men and 30.9% of women -- which we understand could lead to significant future health problems, mainly related to the nervous system," underlined the researcher.
Anomalous attitudes to food were more evident among women (16.6%), although also present among men (8.8%). "However, the statistical analysis showed that this parameter depended on the degree the student was studying for," added Cancela. Such attitudes were much more common among those studying degrees related to education (19.2%) than among those studying courses related to health (6.3%).
Health network
Spanish universities set up a Healthy University Network in 2008, a project for healthy living for universities from all over Spain, the Spanish University Rectors' Association, the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport and some regional public health entities.
In the researcher's opinion, at many universities this network was nothing more than "a simple first step to get on the list and nothing else"; hence transversal content should be implemented in study plans related to food, physical exercise and healthy habits.
"In the light of the results, training and information courses are required in these areas, together with healthy leisure -- not just sports facilities -- to set up university guidance services for a healthy student lifestyle," concludes Cancela.
Genetic predisposition
A recent study published in the PNAS journal argues that the gene called RASGRF2 could be related to a predisposition to getting drunk.
According to scientists, this gene regulates the predisposition to drink excessive amounts of alcohol as it influences mesolimbic dopamine neuron activity, which is one of the ways dopamine is taken from one region of the brain to another.
Gunter Schumann, one of the main authors of the study, explained that even though we should not consider said gene to be the main cause -- as there are many environmental factors and other genes involved -- the study thereof helps to explain why some people are more vulnerable to alcohol than others.

Drink Recipe: Hibiscus Ginger Punch Recipes from The Kitchn | The ...
Most punch recipes cater to a single crowd: drinkers or non-drinkers. This one is delicious either way. Whether you fizz it up with champagne or mineral water, hibiscus ginger punch will put a colorful sparkle in your celebrations.
When I started dreaming of a festive punch, I initially considered cranberry or pomegranate but, frankly, I was a bit tired of these ingredients, which appear in every other beverage this time of year. Instead, I turned to a holiday tradition from Jamaica, where a drink called "sorrel" is made from hibiscus blossoms. Throughout the world, dried hibiscus or roselle is steeped in water to make crimson-colored tisanes, juices, and punches, and in Jamaica especially the hibiscus is combined with ginger for a tart and pleasantly spicy beverage.
To make this punch, I mixed a rich hibiscus and ginger base with ginger ale and then either champagne, sparkling white wine, or sparkling mineral water. For the non-alcoholic version I recommend using a true mineral water (like Perrier) rather than other carbonated waters. Its subtle mineral flavor and more delicate bubbles are a sophisticated substitute for the alcohol. But use any fizzy water that works for you.
On the subject of substitutions, what if you can't find dried hibiscus blossoms (also known as "flor de jamaica" in Latin American markets)? Try making a strong brew with hibiscus tea bags; Celestial Seasonings and The Republic of Tea are two widely available brands.
Hibiscus Ginger Punch
Serves about 124 1/2 cups water
1 cup dried hibiscus blossoms
2-inch piece of ginger, thinly sliced
1 cup sugar
4 cups chilled ginger ale
2 750-mL bottles chilled champagne, sparkling white wine, or sparkling mineral water
Optional: ice, garnishes of mint, lemon or lime slices
Combine water, hibiscus blossoms, and ginger in a pot. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Turn off heat and stir in sugar. Let cool, strain, and chill. (If you like, save some of the plumped-up hibiscus blossoms for garnish.)
To make punch, stir hibiscus juice with ginger ale and champagne or mineral water. Garnish if desired and serve immediately.

Massive settlement in Toyota acceleration cases
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it has reached a settlement worth more than $1 billion in a case involving unintended acceleration problems in its vehicles.
The company said the deal will resolve hundreds of lawsuits from Toyota owners who said the value of their cars and trucks plummeted after a series of recalls stemming from claims that Toyota vehicles accelerated unintentionally.
Steve Berman, a lawyer representing Toyota owners, said the settlement is the largest in U.S. history involving automobile defects.
"We kept fighting and fighting and we secured what we think was a good settlement given the risks of this litigation," Berman told The Associated Press.
The proposed deal was filed Wednesday and must receive the approval of U.S. District Judge James Selna, who was expected to review the settlement Friday.
Toyota said it will take a one-time, $1.1 billion pre-tax charge against earnings to cover the estimated costs of the settlement. Berman said the total value of the deal is between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion.
Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Toyota since 2009, when the Japanese automaker started receiving numerous complaints that its cars accelerated on their own, causing crashes, injuries and even deaths.
The cases were consolidated in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana and divided into two categories: economic loss and wrongful death. Claims by people who seek compensation for injury and death due to sudden acceleration are not part of the settlement; the first trial involving those suits is scheduled for February.
As part of the economic loss settlement, Toyota will offer cash payments from a pool of about $250 million to eligible customers who sold vehicles or turned in leased vehicles between September 2009 and December 2010.
The company also will launch a $250 million program for 16 million current owners to provide supplemental warranty coverage for certain vehicle components, and it will retrofit about 3.2 million vehicles with a brake override system. An override system is designed to ensure a car will stop when the brakes are applied, even if the accelerator pedal is depressed.
The settlement would also establish additional driver education programs and fund new research into advanced safety technologies.
"In keeping with our core principles, we have structured this agreement in ways that work to put our customers first and demonstrate that they can count on Toyota to stand behind our vehicles," said Christopher Reynolds, Toyota vice president and general counsel.
Current and former Toyota owners are expected to receive more information about the settlement in the coming months. Some information is also available at http://www.ToyotaELsettlement.com , a website created for Toyota owners affected by the settlement.
"We are extraordinarily proud of how we were able to represent the interests of Toyota owners, and believe this settlement is both comprehensive in its scope and fair in compensation," Berman said.
Toyota has recalled more than 14 million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems in several models and brake defects with the Prius hybrid. The automaker has blamed driver error, faulty floor mats and stuck accelerator pedals for the problems.
Plaintiffs' attorneys have spent the past two years deposing Toyota employees, poring over thousands of documents and reviewing software code, but the company maintains those lawyers have been unable to prove that a design defect ? namely Toyota's electronic throttle control system ? was responsible for vehicles surging unexpectedly.
Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and NASA were unable to find any defects in Toyota's source code that could cause problems.
The company has been dogged by fines for not reporting problems in a timely manner.
Earlier this month, NHTSA doled out a record $17.4 million fine to Toyota for failing to quickly report floor mat problems with some of its Lexus models. Toyota paid a total of $48.8 million in fines for three violations in 2010.
Toyota President Akio Toyoda appeared before Congress last year and pledged to strengthen quality control. Recent sales figures show the company appears to have rebounded following its safety issues.

Monkey Brain Area Keeps Count of Kindnesses
Monkeys can be kind to their neighbors ? and they have a specific brain region which appears to record their good deeds. Image: Flickr/jinterwas
Monkeys might not be known for their generosity, but when they do seem to act selflessly, a specific area in their brains keeps track of these kindnesses.
The discovery of this neuronal tally chart may help scientists to understand the neural mechanisms underlying normal social behavior in primates and humans, and might even provide insight into disorders such as autism, in which social processing is disrupted.
Steve Chang and his colleagues from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, used electrodes to directly record neuronal activity in three areas of the brain prefrontal cortex that are known to be involved in social decision-making, while monkeys performed reward-related tasks.?
When given the option either to drink juice from a tube themselves or to give the juice away to a neighbor, the test monkeys would mostly keep the drink. But when the choice was between giving the juice to the neighbor or neither monkey receiving it, the choosing monkey would frequently opt to give the drink to the other monkey.
The researchers found that in two out of the three brain areas being recorded, neurons fired in the presence or absence of the juice reward only. By contrast, the third area ? known as the anterior cingulate gyrus ? responded only when the monkey allocated the juice to the neighbor and observed it being received. The authors suggest the neurons in the ACG respond to and record the act simultaneously. The study's results are published today in Nature Neuroscience.
?This is the first time that we have had quite such a complete picture of the neuronal activity underlying a key aspect of social cognition. It is definitely a major achievement,? says Matthew Rushworth, a neuroscientist at the University of Oxford, UK.
The anterior cingulate gyrus is known to be a region that is specialized for social decision-making in primates, and it is located in the same area of the brain as that associated with the generation of feelings of empathy in humans.
Being nice
?The great complexity of human social interactions and the huge variation in what we find rewarding compared with other primates prompts questions about whether the anterior cingulate gyrus operates similarly in the human brain,? Matthew Apps and Narender Ramnani, who work on neuroimaging and human cognition at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK, told Nature in an email.
Through the development of a specific part of the brain that experiences the reward of others, social decisions and empathy-like processes may have been favored during evolution in primates to allow altruistic behavior. ?This may have evolved originally to promote being nice to family, since they share genes, and later friends, for reciprocal benefits,? says Michael Platt, a neuroscientist from Duke University who is a co-author of the paper.
The authors suggest that the intricate balance between the signaling of neurons in these three brain regions may be crucial for normal social behavior in humans, and that disruption may contribute to various psychiatric conditions, including autistic spectrum disorders.

An interview with the author of Analyzing Jesus: Questioning The ...
Here it is ? Christmas time ? and what crosses my path but a book that some would call heresy.? If you?re a devout Christian ? Analyzing Jesus ? will rock you and potentially strengthen your faith or wobble it.? The book can be found on Amazon here.? In the description the following words are shared:
Analyzing Jesus: Questioning the Doctrine of Christianity may be one of the most compelling arguments ever written in support of the belief that Jesus of Nazareth may have never existed as an historical person. While currently pursuing his B.A. in Science and Religion, Dorsey, began composing Analyzing Jesus before graduating Liberty University?s Willmington School of the Bible. Dorsey?s extensive research skillfully challenges the ?Jesus Defenders? of our day with many of the Bibles irrefutable contradictions, inconsistencies, myths, fabrications and forgeries.
Analyzing Jesus not only offers an in-depth study on the Christian doctrine but also gives attention to the pagan origins of the resurrection. As Dorsey brilliantly lays out the facts, opinions, and arguments, amongst some of the world?s most influential scholars, evangelist, historian?s and theologians; he also, exposes the hidden manipulation that is associated with organized religion and its goal to constantly control what we are to believe. So could it be true that the Jesus story is one of the greatest myth?s ever told? You decide!
The interview with Dorsey follows.? Feel free to ask questions or respond to this blog interview on what I think will be a hot topic!
1.???? You have just written a book ? Analyzing Jesus: Questioning The Doctrine of Christianity ? tell my readers what inspired you to write such a potentially controversial book.
Well Chuck, what inspired me to write such a controversial book on such a controversial subject is simple?Christians deserve to know the truth, not my truth, not his truth, but ?the truth? about their religion and its history. It wasn?t long ago that prior to it being called the Holy Bible the ancients called it the Helio Biblia, the Book of the Sun. This is because Sun worship was an ancient pagan practice in ancient Egyptian, Asian, and Indo-European cultures centuries before Christianity immerged as a religion. But when it did flourish as a religion the emperor Constantine who was a sun-worshipper himself in 321 A.D issued a decree making Sun-day the official day of rest; which is the main reason why Christians go to Church on Sunday and not Saturday.
So make no mistake about it when Jesus is being referenced as the ?Son of God? he is really being cited as a personification of the ?Sun.? This is why we are told ?As the men watched, Jesus? appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun? (Matt. 17:2). Moreover, Christians deserve to know that the Gospel?s were not written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John but by anonymous authors who never met Jesus. Also, nowhere in the New Testament do we read ?I, Jesus write these things.? In fact, no one including Paul has ever laid eyes on the alleged God-man?Jesus Christ.
2.?? ?Give my readers an insight into your background.? You were once a Christian songwriter?? Seems like going from songwriter to skeptic is a massive stretch.? Share with us your journey.
Sure, for 21 years of my life I always strived to be the Christian God wanted me to be. I?d go to Church, study what I once believed to be the word of God and diligently helped spread the message of Jesus Christ. It wasn?t long that I started my own independent record label called God Musiq. The puissance of my desire to write songs for Christ was truly amazing. As a result, to really show my dedication to God I took it upon myself to enroll in Bible College so that I could become more effective in the kingdom (as Christians say). I also, wanted to be more knowledgeable in the Bible and its history. This way I could teach it in my music and to people more effectively. Little did I know my faith was about to change?forever!
3.?? ?In your bio on Amazon it says, ?It was during my enrollment in Bible College that I seriously began to question the Christ figure. Did he truly walk the earth or was he just a myth??? Tell us the story of how your transformation came to be.
Yeah, during my enrollment in Bible College we learned so much from Apologetics, Systematic Theology, Christology, Hermeneutics which is the art and science of interpreting scripture, and Church history including the rise of modern Roman Catholicism. But it wasn?t until we began to study The Case for The Resurrection of Jesus resurrection of Jesus by Dr. Gary Habermas & New Testament scholar Michael Licona, who both admit that ?Although, other religions contain ?resurrection accounts?, there are excellent reasons for accepting the story of Jesus resurrection while rejecting others? (pg. 89).
Surprised, I was then curious to know what other religions contained resurrection accounts. It wasn?t long before I would learn in my own personal time of study that the resurrection story is really an ancient pagan myth that originated in Egypt. In fact it can be found in the Pyramid Text written on the pyramid walls of the last king of the fifth dynasty, Unas (B.C. 2375-2345) over 2,000 years before Christianity.
In these texts we learn about the Resurrection and Ascension of a Deceased King, named Horus. In fact, in Egyptian mythology Horus can always be seen with a ?sun-disk? around his head identical to many ancient paintings of Jesus. Lastly, the original manuscript of Mark?s Gospel did not contain a resurrection account of the risen Lord. Chapter 16 originally ends at verse 8. This has been the most ignored ?addition? to the Jesus story. Learning these things and more were the beginning stages of how my religious to non-religious transformation came to be.
4.?? ?You know that publishing a book like ?Analyzing Jesus? had to have some repercussions when it came to the education you were receiving.? What response have you received from the academic community?
You know Chuck, so far no one from the academic community has tried to challenge my knowledge or discredit my work. But I?m sure they will and honestly I look forward to it because I can support all of my arguments with conspicuous facts, references and explanations to help sustain, serve and defend the belief that Jesus Christ may have never breathed, one single breath, on the face of this earth. Even Paul admitted that he was ?sent not from men nor by man?? (Gal 1:1). He also admitted that ?he received his message from no human source? (Gal. 1:12). So was Jesus not a man? Was he not a ?human? source? This is why there is so much debate over Paul?s letters because many scholars have come to believe that Paul was a Gnostic and was not referring to a historical Christ. In fact, Paul is severely silent on just about everything the Gospels tell us about Jesus and in my book Analyzing Jesus I discuss this at length.
5.?? ?Share with my readers some of the challenges (if any) that have arisen as a result of your written and very public challenge to the life and existence of Jesus.
One of the main challenges I face is constantly having to explain to Christians that the intent of my book Analyzing Jesus is not to hinder anyone?s faith in Christ or God. As paradox as this may sound my goal is not to stir up controversy; but rather to truly help educate Christians on what they?ve been taught to believe. But because I challenge the existence of a human Christ some Christians simply do not care to learn about some of the Bibles most irrefutable contradictions, inconsistencies, myths, fabrications and forgeries. Instead, they?d rather graduate to new levels of blind faith.
6.?? ??Analyzing Jesus? is seemingly well thought out ? yet there have to be many in the academic community that would refute your challenges to Jesus.? What type of challenges have you received relative to your new book?
Well in my book I make it clear that if Jesus wasn?t God and if God wasn?t Jesus, then Christianity is idolatry, therefore we must develop the habit of examining what the scriptures say of Christ. Because to be Christian we must believe that Jesus was God manifested in the flesh and this is what creates the challenge. But we must ask ourselves if Jesus was God why would Jesus say: ?Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone? (Mk. 10:8)??? If Jesus was God why would God be ?seated at the right hand of God? (Col. 3:1)? After all aren?t we told ?God is not a man?? (Num. 23:19)? These questions and so many others I address in my book Analyzing Jesus. I also debunk the doctrine of the Trinity and expose how it was formulated which is another challenge I receive from Christians who try to explain away the deity of Christ.
7.?? ?Several quotes on your Amazon site share that your book took them away from Jesus or Christianity. What was your intent when writing the book? ?
Good question Chuck I?m Glad you asked that actually. I make it very clear in my book that the intent of its pages is not written to undermine the Christian faith nor cause disbelief in God in fact it?s quite the opposite. My primary objective is to pass along the knowledge and information I carefully researched over the past 24 months of my life. Which pertains to the life of Jesus Christ did he or did he not exist? Therefore, my hope is to help enlighten the mind of another especially Christians because again they deserve to know the truth about their religion.
8.?? ?How has your research and the resultant effort in writing your book changed your faith or religious belief or both?
Honestly, at first it changed me for the worse. I was upset because I felt I had been lied to, I felt deceived and bamboozled. I was a Christian for 21 years of my life, very active in the Church and really did whatever it took to spread the message of Jesus Christ to my friends, family and strangers. But it wasn?t until I came to the realization that God, or the Creator (as I like to call it) cannot be fully explained or completely understood nor conformed into a ?religion? and I truly believe that?s the beauty of it. Because everything is not meant for us to understand, however, something?s are. I also believe that the search for truth takes you wherever the evidence leads you, and therefore I was led to Analyze Jesus and Question the Doctrine of Christianity.
9.?? ?What three things do you wish your readers to gain from your book?
If there were three things I?d want my readers to gain from my book it would be to inherit knowledge, logic and truth about early Christianity, the organic meaning of Christ, and the hidden manipulation that is associated with organized religion
10.?? ?A number of my readers are in the media, so as we conclude this interview ? what two things would you want them to know about the uniqueness of your book?
I would want them to know that in my book Analyzing Jesus I can confidently uncover all the loopholes in the Jesus story, how it was formulated, how it was fabricated and even worse how it was forged.? I would also want them to know that you can now purchase my new book Analyzing Jesus: Questioning the Doctrine of Christianity on Amazon.com and send any questions you may have to me on Twitter @Analyzing Jesus. Thanks

How Do You Say Nutcracker in Russian?
Photograph by iStockphoto.
WARSAW?I ran into my friend Dorota at the Nutcracker Suite a few days ago. As the orchestra began to play the familiar bars of Tchaikovsky's overture, she sighed. "I've seen it every year for the past 10 years," she confessed. "Finally I thought I could skip it this year. But then my daughter got a part in the children's chorus. " I nodded in sympathy. Then the curtain rose, revealing a spectacular piece of scenery: the Vistula River and the snow-covered skyline of 19th-century Warsaw in the background. Snow was falling, and children seemed to be skating on what appeared to be real ice.
We sat back to watch. As always, I waited to see how they would do it: How the Polish National Ballet would frame the story, design the costumes and the sets, and elaborate upon what is?let's face it?a pretty thin plot. I'd seen its version several years ago, but this one was new. The ballet brought in a Dutch choreographer to redesign the whole thing, to change the dances and think up some new twists to fill the interminably long second half.
In the course of raising two children, I've seen the Nutcracker many, many times, performed in many, many ways. When they were very young, we watched a Washington Ballet version for several years running. This was pretty much the Nutcracker as I remembered it from my own childhood, complete with a pre-teen corps de ballet. Clara wore her nightgown throughout the performance and threw her shoe at the Mouse King.
That's what I thought the Nutcracker would always be?until we found ourselves in Berlin one Christmas and went to see it at the Deutsche Staatsoper. I took my children and a friend's son, promising all of them a battle between toy soldiers and the mice. Instead, we got a dark, strange and distinctly Germanic version of the story, filled with allusions to a possible incestuous relationship between Clara and her godfather, or maybe between the godfather and Clara's mother. There was no battle at all, presumably because that would offend the antiwar sentiments of the Berliners.
The children were disappointed?but so, presumably, are the children who went to see the Bayerische Staatsoper version this year, which offers a Nutcracker that "boldly comments on the state of our society." So are all of the other children who go expecting sugar plum fairies and get, instead, dark ruminations on modern adolescence.
There are, of course, other ways to deal with the production. In Russia, the focus is on the extraordinarily athletic dancers. I once saw Mikhail Baryshnikov dance the Nutcracker and still remember how he leapt into the air and appeared to hang there for several seconds. The Polish version, at least the one we saw last week, provides extraordinary sets, gorgeous costumes, and a plot revolving around a magic lantern that all of the characters enter, somehow, to dance out that long second act.
But while the ballet can be designed and choreographed in different ways, the audience never changes. Wherever and whenever I've seen the Nutcracker, it's always at Christmastime, and it's always in a theater filled with children. Many of the little girls, whether in Warsaw or Washington, are wearing velvet dresses. Many of the babies are too small to be there and eventually have to be taken out. All of the parents appear to be middle-class, slightly frumpy?and very determined to give their children at least this one experience of high culture before they disappear into the maw of pop culture forever. What else can we do? This ballet has a lot more riding on it than one might think.
The lucky ones are there to see their children perform. A few weeks ago, even Barack Obama went to see his daughter Sasha dance the part of a mouse at a performance in Bethesda, Md. My personal experience of mouse costumes makes me wonder whether he managed to recognize her.
As for Dorota's daughter, she never did appear on stage. We think we heard her?the children's choir sings off-stage during the snowflake dance, at the end of the first act?and agreed that she was marvelous. After her part was over, she sat with us to watch the Chinese dancers, the Russian dancers, the Arab dancers, and the dance of the flowers. My own children, now teenagers, slumped in their seats all the way through the performance, and I think one of them slept. Nevertheless, they declared afterward that they were glad to have seen it. Already, it reminded them of their childhood

EMERGENCY funds have saved a skills centre in Harwich opening late.
Tendring Council has given ?32,000 to Colchester Institute?s Energy Skills Centre in Parkeston so it can open in time in January.
Cash will pay for a new power supply to the headquarters, at Hamilton House, Foster Road, as well as improvements to create two IT suits, wireless networking, a fitted kitchen and common room facilities.
The improvements would have had to be scrapped if the college?s bid was unsuccessful, to keep the opening of the centre on track.
Money will be paid back if it can be found from other sources.
The Energy Skills Centre will provide further education, apprenticeship and employment programmes to more than 150 people by July 2013.
Students will learn about different sources of energy to give them a full breadth and understanding of the subject.

Get Glowing: Airbrush tanning owner on crusade against skin ...
Walking into Kathleen Jowdy?s airbrush tanning salon, Get Glowing, clients are greeted with the statistic that people who use tanning beds increase their melanoma cancer risk by 75%. By airbrush spray tanning, clients are reducing their risk of developing skin cancer, she said.
According to the Melanoma Foundation of New England?s website, melanoma is the most common cancer among women aged 25 to 32 and the New England states have a higher than average rate of melanoma.
Opening Get Glowing is part of Ms. Jowdy?s crusade against skin cancer and keeping skin youthful and healthy, she said. Part of her mission is to educate high school- and college-aged girls on the dangers of sun tanning, both outside and in a tanning bed.
She said that by encouraging younger girls to start spray tanning and taking care of their skin now, they won?t have damage to undo later on.
?There is a big misconception with skin cancer that it can just be scraped off,? she said. The scars it leaves can be huge, she said. ?They have to dig it [the cancer] out.?
A lot of the clients that Ms. Jowdy sprays have had melanoma, including a 19-year-old girl, she said.
In 2012, Brazil outlawed tanning beds altogether, she said, and New South Wales, Australia, will be banning tanning beds in 2014. Many states in the United States have passed or are working to pass legislation to ban tanning beds for people under the age of 18 or require parental consent for their use. In Connecticut, there is a requirement for parental or guardian consent for a person under 16.
A healthy alternative to keeping skin glowing and tan, Ms. Jowdy said, is by airbrush spray tanning.
?Spray tanning was made popular in New York or L.A. and was more of a luxury. It was $70 to $150 per session and was geared for models or actresses,? said Ms. Jowdy. ?Now it is more mainstream and prices are more reasonable. I made mine to be about the same cost as a manicure or pedicure ? so it?s affordable to do every week.?
Ms. Jowdy also wants people to rid the idea that spray tans just make people orange and streaky.
When spray tanning was first introduced, it was done in a stand-up stall that sprayed the front and back of a person.
?There was one solution for every person, which made them orange,? she said. ?The technique has been perfected to be applied by hand with an airbrush, and I custom blend the solution for any skin tone.?
Ms. Jowdy said many clients have come to her to fix a bad spray tan.
?They?d be oversprayed, uneven and streaky,? she said. ?I want my salon to be about consistency ? perfect results every time.?
Before opening her own salon, Ms. Jowdy would spray clients at a salon in Bethel.
?I found that a lot of my clients were coming up from Greenwich, New Canaan and Darien, so I found this location to be in the middle,? she said.
Get Glowing is located on Route 7 at 280 Ethan Allen Highway in Georgetown.
In order to find the right tanning solution, Ms. Jowdy tested multiple brands before she settled on the one she uses today. She practiced spraying herself and then other people.
?The tan lasts five to seven days and takes 10 minutes to apply,? she said. ?A lot of my clients come once a week to maintain a glow all year.?
It is recommended that clients schedule an appointment the day before an event to give the solution eight to 12 hours to settle.
?I also have a rapid developing spray that takes four to six hours to settle. If a client has an event Saturday evening, they can come in Saturday morning and be tan for the event,? said Ms. Jowdy.
A spray tanning session at Get Glowing costs between $40 and $50, including the pre-spray. Pre-spray moisturizes, exfoliates and balances the pH of the body Before the tan is applied. It makes for a more even coverage, and balancing the pH prevents the skin from turning orange, she said.
?Salons around here are higher, they charge around $70 to $75 per session and don?t include the pre-spray,? said Ms. Jowdy.
The brand of solution Ms. Jowdy uses is a secret, she said, but it is organic and has a the DHA [dihydroxyacetone] enzyme in it.
?It is a sugar derivative and is FDA proved for external use,? she said.
The tanning solution does rub off onto clothing and sheets, but it is a water-based solution so it washes out, she said.
Ms. Jowdy has sprayed about 1,500 people and she?s never had anyone get a rash or allergic reaction to it, she said.
?It is for all skin types and colors and I do the appropriate skin tone for the season,? said Ms. Jowdy.
Recently Ms. Jowdy went to the University of Connecticut to spray-tan girls in a sorority, she said.
?I go to UConn and spray three sororities before events and dances. Each time I go, it [the number of girls] increases. This time I sprayed 37 girls. That?s 37 girls that didn?t make five appointments each at a tanning salon. And the spray tan lasts just as long,? said Ms. Jowdy.
Get Glowing is open Wednesday through Friday from noon to 8 p.m.
Ms. Jowdy said people don?t think about what will happen to their skin in the future or aging when in the sun.
?I wish I never went in the sun; I?m trying to undo the damage,? she said.
Ms. Jowdy wants women to know that airbrush spray tanning looks natural and is a safe alternative to tanning booths and beds.
For more information or to schedule a session, call 203-826-9557 or 203-512-5053.

No threat to game sales from Connecticut shooting, says analyst
Cowan & Company analyst Doug Creutz is convinced that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting incident will have little to no impact on the sales of video games, even the ones depicting violence.
He assured the worried investors that video games will continue to sell well in the market irrespective of a new legislation, which seems highly likely with West Virginia Democrat senator Jay Rockefeller introducing a bill in the Congress for investigation of effects of violent games on children and their well-being.
Creutz also stated that the consumer backlash in the wake of tragic Connecticut shooting would be minor at most and will therefore not result in significant losses at all.
?We have received many questions from investors about the potential impact of the recent tragedy in Newtown on our covered universe of video game publisher stocks,? Creutz said. ?While this is a difficult issue to address due to the intense emotions surrounding the incident, we have attempted to present a summary of the relevant facts herein.?
The Cowan & Company analyst noted that the Supreme Court?s ruling last week, which deemed sales of violent games to children is in direct violation of the First Amendment, has laid down a solid ground for any attempts to regulate sales of video game to be struck down immediately.
Addressing the bill introduced by Rockefeller in Congress, Creutz contended that majority of the adults have already established an opinion about the effect of video game violence and real world violence and these opinions will not change that easily.
The bill introduced in Congress would task the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to carry out a comprehensive study and investigation of the effects of violence in video games and other programming and their effects on the minds and well-being of children.
Creutz claimed that retailer checks with Amazon has revealed that first-person shooters such as Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Halo 4 are continuing to do really well in terms of market performance, thus making it quite obvious that the consumer behaviour has hardly been affected by the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
